The Mesutchi (メスっち) and Osutchi (オスっち) (Mesu meaning girl, and Osu meaning boy) are a collective Tamagotchi release that debuted December 1997. The Mesutchi and Osutchi are the first Tamagotchi releases that introduced the concept of breeding and, unlike other Tamagotchi pets at the time, has a total of 10 icons.

Shell Design

The Mesutchi and Osutchi is larger than the original Tamagotchi pets. They are the same size as modern Tamagotchi virtual pets. The top features a removable cap, and inside held two small, square conductors. This is used to attach the two toys together.

Five designs were released, as well as a special collector's edition to celebrate the first anniversary of Tamagotchi. The sets are: blue and pink, clear smoke and clear black, white with orange and white with green, clear orange and clear green, and yellow with pink and white with blue. The collector's edition set is also blue and pink, but shinier and with different patterns.

Test Version

In August of 1997, market test versions of the toy saw a limited release in Japan. It was identical to the final version, save for a few animation differences:

  • When disciplining the pet, a hammer would appear hitting its head.
  • When giving medicine, a syringe would appear.
  • When breeding, Ojitchi and Otokitchi would appear and provide a futon to the pet. On the final version, they were both removed, and instead of showing a futon, it showed the character standing next to the word "OK".

Functions

The Mesutchi and Osutchi includes all of the normal Tamagotchi functions, though it introduces several new ones.

Game

The game on the Mesutchi and Osutchi is called "Flag". The Tamagotchi will hold up two flags: a white flag on their left, and a black flag on their right. The user must press the corresponding button (A for white, B for black) when the Tamagotchi holds up the flag. There are five turns, and getting at least three out of five correct is considered a win.

TMP

The TMP (Tamagotchi Mating Power) Icon is located as the 8th icon, and appears as a smiling face wearing a crown. It tells what family the character is in and what generation it has grown to. When two characters of the same TMP breed, the resulting babies will be of the next TMP. If two characters of different TMP breed, the babies will have the TMP of the parent with the lowest TMP.

Breeding

The Breeding Icon is the ninth icon. When the Mesutchi and Osutchi became adults, players could interlock the two pets, then make them breed and have babies. There are two adult characters on each that are incapable of this: one is the neglect adult (Sutebotchi and Tsuketchi), and the other is the senior (Ojitchi and Otokitchi). Unlike modern pets where the gender can vary between generations, characters on the Osutchi will always be male, and on the Mesutchi always female.
