The Tamagotchi Angel (てんしっちのたまごっち Tenshitchi no Tamagotchi, colloquially known as the Angelgotchi or Tenshitchi) is a Tamagotchi Virtual Pet release focused on the Tamagotchi afterlife.

It debuted in Japan in August 1997, and was released worldwide by Bandai's international branches in February 1998.

A mobile phone version of the game was released later on. The mobile game was remade and released for smartphones as Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. Angel on February 26, 2014, which has since been discontinued.

Design[]

The Tamagotchi Angel is the same size and shell as the original Tamagotchi; however, it has a pair of two angel wings on the sides of the screen. The wings are painted with glittering over instead of being printed like the rest of the shell, and can be either silver or gold, depending on the shell color. The molding material is also different, giving the Angel models a unique pastel glitter appearance.

The Tamagotchi Angel was the first model to have a vibration sensor (either from motion or sound). Tapping the tamagotchi (either screen or side of the shell) or making a loud noise in close proximity, will trigger the sensor.

The first production run of the Japanese models featured the original Tamagotchi-style icons, while the second run had newly designed icons exclusive to the Angel. The toilet icon was represented by a butt with wings on the Japanese version, while it is represented by a roll of toilet paper on the English version.

Backstory[]

On the Tamagotchi Planet, floating in the sky is the Tenshitchi Capital, home of the Angels, the spirits of Tamagotchi characters that have died. Angels water the clouds to provide rain across the Planet, grow their angelic powers through prayer, and help and guide the living Tamagotchi in small ways.

On the Tamagotchi Angel, many Angels returned to The Earth to spend more time with their human caretakers, and to thank them for letting them live good lives. However, they cannot be away from the Tenshitchi Capital for very long, and must eventually return. The user is tasked with raising their Angel, training them to do good deeds while keeping them from becoming the evil Deviltchi.

Functions[]

The Tamagotchi Angel functions much the same as the original Tamagotchi. After the clock is set, the Angel is born, and the user must care for it through various stages of its life cycle.

Check Meter[]

Unlike the original Tamagotchi, the Check meter is now the first icon. The weight is replaced with Angel Power, the Happy meter is replaced by the Effort meter, and the training meter is the Deeds meter.

Angel Power[]

Angel Power (initialed AP, known as てんしパワー Tenshi Power, or TP, on the Japanese version) is a special feature replacing weight and is affected through the intake of candy. When the Angel eats candy, the bat from Devil World occasionally shows up in an attempt to steal it, and a successful theft will result in the loss of AP points and progress on the Deeds meter. Angel Power primarily affects evolution during the teen, adult, and special stages and might also decrease if prayer calls are missed, or if the Angel is left alone for a period of time.

Strolls[]

Throughout the day, the Angel may leave to take a stroll, leaving the Attention icon lit. This is represented by a door on the Japanese version, and a blank screen on the international version. Selecting the praise icon and gently tapping the screen will summon the Angel back, showing them doing a unique animation before returning to normal. If the user does not respond, the Angel will eventually return on its own. If a button is pressed during a specific point in the animation of the Tamagotchi being called back home, a special and strange image may appear instead of the usual sprite.

Prayer[]

Throughout the day, the Angel will pray, indicated by it stopping in the middle of the screen and performing an animation. In the teen, adult, and special stages, there will also be twinkling stars on either side of the Angel. The user must praise the Angel; doing so will increase the Angel's Deeds meter. Praising the Angel will end the animation. Once the Angel is finished praying (whether or not it was praised), it will poo. Not praising does not count as a care mistake.

Game[]

The game featured is the "Shooting Star Game". The Angel will appear on the left side, while shooting stars will fly in from the right side. The user must press either A or B to make the Angel fly over the star. The Angel will fly in the air for a few frames before landing; they can land within the star's dust trail, but not on the star itself. The game lasts for five rounds, and the star must be successfully dodged three times to win. As candy raises the AP meter, the game is the only way to fill the Angel's Effort meter.

Treatment[]

Unlike other models, the Angel does not naturally get sick over the course of its life. However, if it is either severely neglected or if the lights are turned off during the daytime, the Angel will be ambushed by Gaikotchi, causing the Angel to become sick. Selecting the Treatment icon will banish Gaikotchi. The icon may have to be used more than once, and in the event of an imminent bad end, Gaikotchi may appear and not be able to be banished, even after selecting the icon many times, until the ending sequence begins.

Toilet[]

After prayer, whether the Angel is praised or not, it will leave a poo. Selecting the toilet icon will clean away the poo. As the Angel only leaves a poo after prayer, it also serves as a visual indication to the user that they missed a prayer call.

Lights[]

When the Angel goes to sleep, the user selects this icon to turn the lights on or off. Not turning the lights off before the Attention icon vanishes will result in a care mistake. An Angel will only grow and age while it is awake, and a year will be added to its age on the check meter every time it wakes up. Every Angel has its own waking and sleeping hours. Turning off the lights during the day can cause the Angel to get sick by Gaikotchi or depart. At the Adult and Special stages, the chance of a bad end occurring as a result of turning off the lights falls drastically, but the chance of them departing is much higher.

Departure[]

The Tamagotchi Angel is the first release to feature two distinct ending screens, one considered good and the other considered bad.

A good end will only occur if the Angel's time on Earth ends as an adult, and features the character crying in the middle of the screen as they prepare to say farewell. Pressing the B button will trigger a cutscene of a beam of light parting open like a curtain and the Angel ascending skyward represented by a black dot. On the Japanese version, the screen then scrolls to the right to show "Thanks!", while on the international releases the screen cuts to a shot full of twinkling stars.

A bad end will occur as a result of neglect, usually before adulthood. While turning off the lights constantly will eventually result in an ending sequence, it will usually cause a good end if the Angel has reached adulthood and had lived for a long period of time with good care. The bad end animation consists of the character blinking back and forth between their normal form and Deviltchi (or on the international releases, a black egg or stone) while droning beeps play, before eventually settling on a screen showing Deviltchi floating next to a skull, or a screen showing the phrase "Bye bye!" on the international versions. Occasionally, the Angel may get sick before the bad end, and can take a significant number of medicinal dosages without effect until the death animation eventually begins.
