[edit] The Great Tamagotchi Fan Shell-ection Contest

The Great Tamagotchi Fan Shell-ection Contest was a competition held on Tamagotchi.com beginning on July 22, 2006. The name is a play on the word "Shell", which is used to describe colors and designs for Tamagotchis, "Selection" (to select), and "Election".

The contest consisted of four different shell designs being posted on the website each week, and fans got to vote which one to be the new shell design for the V4. 12 shell designs were shown in total, and the Glow-In-The-Dark design was announced the winner in December 2006. The rest of the shells, despite not getting the highest votes, were eventually released as well.

[edit] Features

The V4 has several features used from Tamagotchi Connection Version 2, Tamagotchi Connection Version 3, and the Entama. These include shopping, Tamatown access, mail, and points.

[edit] Mail

The mail feature, which replaces the "light" function, is slightly different from its Entama counterpart. While the Entama recieved letters, newspapers (in the morning), and important notices, the V4 uses letters, important notices, and Fortune Stars.

The Stars, when read, predict your Tamagotchi's fortune in 3 catagories: Points, Love, and Skills. 1 heart is bad, 2 average, and 3 good. Any catagory with 3 stars improves; for example, if a Tamagotchi recieved 3 stars in Points, it would recieve more points after winning a game 6 skill points instead of five.

The V4's letters also differ from the Entama's. The Entama had actual letters, with words that the player scrolls through. The V4, in turn, has images that depict what is written on the letter itself.

The Important Notice letters are still the same between the V4 and the Entama. They both are recieved during important events in the Tamagotchi's life, such as graduating from school or getting a new job.

[edit] Skill Points

Another feature from the Entama, Skill Points, are used with the V4. Games and food items increase certain skills, such as Intelligence, Fashion, and Kindness. The skill points directly affect what jobs your Tamagotchi can recieve and what characters it can become.Skill points allow your tamagotchi to evolve into certain types of characters.

[edit] Tamatown Access

Like the Tamagotchi Connection Version 3, the V4 has access to Tamatown.com to play games and recieve travel items. However, the Login/Logout system has been modified to be more similar to the Japanese counterpart, changing the 10-digit password into a 14-digit password that included letters A through F as well as numbers.

With the inclusions of jobs and education, many aspects of Tamatown were altered to fit the new circumstances, including making the preschool and offices available to be visited.

[edit] Kindergarten

Kindergarten is the school children and early teenagers go to. Depending on how well the owner/Tama does in school will determine the job the Tama will get in adulthood.

[edit] Jobs

Not too different from the Entama's feature, the V4 also has the ability to recieve an education and, eventually, a job. However, many differences are present.

  • Tamagotchi characters now go to school or work when the owner decides. This is done by going to the "Connection" icon, selecting "Work" and pressing B when the "Away" sign appears.
  • The teaching game for teen Tamagotchis has been altered. When the three presents appear, the Skill icon goes into the far right box, and then the boxes flash to resemble two presents switching place, making it easier for owners to win the game.
  • The V4 also has a minigame available for each job. As there are 15 jobs, there are 15 minigames total.
  • Ojitchi and Otokitchi are not allowed to continue their previous career. Instead, the King appears and hands them a cane, announcing their retirement. If the player selects "Work" anytime after with their retired character, they take a stroll through Tamatown and stop by where they previously worked.

[edit] Glitches

What makes the V4 infamous is its vast amount of glitches contained within. There have been reports of the Matchmaker on the first wave of V4s bringing child and teen characters, Another Matchmaker character, characters of the same gender as the owner's Tamagotchi, and black bars that freeze the Tamagotchi completely and force the owner to reset.

Other glitches include foods disappearing from the food menu, balls appearing as food, letters in names changing, and adult V4 characters being able to mate with teen characters on previous versions. Fortunately most glitches are eradicated in the second wave of designs.

A simple way to confirm that your Tamagotchi isn't corrupted is to check the ROM.
